It happened at around 6 p.m. Saturday, April 16 in North Patchogue.

A man was driving a 2006 Mini Cooper in the shopping center parking lot, located at 440 Route 27, when he suffered a medical emergency that caused him to crash into a sign post, Suffolk County Police said.

The driver, age 77, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was the sole occupant in the vehicle and was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
